Summary

Population aging has increased the demand for care of older patients in hospital Emergency Departments (EDs), who are characterized by greater frailty, comorbidity, and complexity of care. The GERyURG study evaluated the implementation of resources, environmental adaptations, and geriatric care strategies in Spanish EDs. A survey was conducted among ED managers, obtaining 62 responses from 294 centers (21 %). Patients older than 65 years accounted for 31 % of ED visits. Frailty screening was performed in 90.3 % of EDs, but only 35.5 % conducted a geriatric assessment adapted to the emergency setting, and 24.2 % had
interdisciplinary teams. Only 11.3 % met all the environmental adaptation measures evaluated. No significant differences were observed according to hospital level of care. Progress has been made in frailty detection, but substantial organizational and carerelated deficiencies remain, highlighting the need to implement comprehensive models of emergency geriatric care.
